A mysterious and desolate ancient cave! Wugui Cave evokes a sense of profound antiquity and desolation. When facing nature, it is rare to truly appreciate the profound meanings hidden within. Wugui, according to legend, were foreign laborers brought to Taiwan by the Dutch, reduced to slaves performing backbreaking labor. They were called "Wugui," meaning "black devils," because of their dark skin. This historical reality likely represents a tragic chapter of suffering akin to the African slave trade. In the 15th year of the Yongli era of the Ming Dynasty (1661), Zheng Chenggong expelled the Dutch. A few black slaves were abandoned in this area and took refuge in this cave. Later, due to their seizing seafaring vessels, these slaves were avenged by passing ships. Under the cover of darkness, wood was piled at the cave entrance and set ablaze, killing all the black sailors inside. It is said that these slaves transformed into ghosts; on misty nights, their spirits are said to bewilder Han fishermen who later settled in this region, thus giving the cave its name. Although the legend behind Wugui Cave is melancholic, following the circular trail through bizarre coral formations and undulating terrain among the oddly shaped coral reefs offers an extraordinary sensation—like walking into a dead-end mountain pass before suddenly discovering a vibrant village beyond a veil of willows.
