Luzhou, formerly known as "Heshangzhou" or "Heshang Island", is a sandbar along the Danshui River, where reeds grow along the shore, and small fish and shrimp swim freely. It's also a gathering place for egrets foraging for food, hence the name "Lugzhou". During the blooming season of reeds, the fluff floats gently in the wind, and the egrets soar and glide low over the area. With the faint evening glow, this natural scenery has been known as "Lvdichan Yue" since ancient times. Due to its struggle with the river for land, which made it unsuitable for farming, Luzhou was one of the later-developed areas in the Taipei basin. A Li family from Tong'an County, Quanzhou, Fujian, entered this sandbar for reclamation relatively early, but with little success. The agricultural conditions in Luzhou only improved when the Danshui River gradually silted up. After years of hard work by the Li family, a large mansion covering over a thousand pings was built in 1903. This is the Luzhou Li residence on Zhongzheng Road, which stands today. In 1861, 40 years before the Li residence was completed, two monks from the Hidden Auspicious Temple on Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang carried a statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara out to sea for alms, but encountered a typhoon and docked in the Danshui area. By chance, they came to Luzhou and built a temple for the statue, which became the Yonglian Temple. The temple's incense was prosperous, and the surrounding area gradually developed into Luzhou's earliest street, extending to Desheng Street and Chenggong Road, forming a traditional retail-based commercial circle known as the temple mouth commercial circle. As the construction of the metro was completed, Luzhou opened up a hub with Taipei, making transportation more convenient. The morning, noon, and evening markets at different times allow you to buy goods or grab a bite to eat at any time. The bustling Luzhou temple street, centered around the Yonglian Temple, has developed into a market with surrounding streets. In the morning, it's a vegetable market; in the afternoon, it's a general merchandise market; and in the evening, it becomes a snack night market. Many famous old brands of snacks are even open all day. The lively atmosphere of the three markets a day always draws a large crowd. Don't forget to try a bowl of the famous quick-boiled noodles, which features a rich and savory broth made with a long-simmered pork bone stock, served with noodles that have just the right texture. The refreshing taste is unforgettable, and it's paired with a variety of small dishes with rich textures, making it suitable as either a main course or a snack.
