The geological landscape is varied. In the south, there are beautiful white beaches that form a typical spit, along with tofu‑shaped beach rock and pot‑holes created by seawater erosion. On the eastern coast, the columnar basalt—both tower‑shaped and curved—has a very distinctive appearance. Starting from Baisha Qitou Port and heading northeast, you’ll reach a body of water about 4 km north of Bird Island, where you can see an island with a large stretch of beach: Xiaobai Sha Island. This spit is a classic example of a sandy tongue; its length is not great, but the sand layers are thick and plentiful. It once served as a sand source during the construction of Bird Island, but after being designated a protected area, further extraction is prohibited. From the southwestern waters of the island, Xiaobai Sha looks like a cat lying in the sea—Bird Island residents call it “Cat Island.” This “Cat Island” is different from the one in the South China Sea that most people refer to. The southern part of the island has a lava plateau about 15–20 m high, extending roughly 250 m from east to south. Its basalt columns have pronounced jointing. The sea cliff on the island’s eastern shore is a volcanic neck about 20 m high, imposing in appearance. On the east side’s sea‑eroded platform, there is a curved vein, with a low, flat volcanic crater nearby. On the western sea‑eroded platform, there is a beach rock that has been eroded into a tofu shape, which reflects beautifully against scattered pot‑holes, making a very interesting sight. Because Xiaobai Sha is a protected area, climbing the island without permission is forbidden, so black‑crowned gulls, white‑eyed gulls, and laughing gulls choose to nest there. At the end of spring and the beginning of summer, they breed in different parts of the island: white‑eyed gulls choose the rocky areas, while black‑crowned gulls and laughing gulls prefer the grasslands. Each species keeps to itself, engaging in courtship, mating, laying eggs, raising chicks, and foraging without interference. This breeding scene is a major highlight of the area each year. When ships travel in the surrounding waters, witnessing the island and the flock of gulls soaring together is a true delight for life.
