Mr. Hong arrived in Jiufen in the 1970s by chance, and was deeply attracted to this place’s unique mountain‑sea scenery and the bittersweet charm of a mountain city that has faded from prosperity. At the same time, the former residence of Weng Shan‑ying was for sale, so he decided to put aside his current business for a while. In 1987 (Minguo 76), he bought this crumbling old house, which had silently witnessed the rise and fall of Jiufen for nearly 70 years, and was in a dilapidated state. With the keen observation and passion of an artist, he discovered the unique beauty of the old house, resolutely preserved its structure and layout, and the only major adjustment was the addition of a courtyard to allow natural light in. By doing so, he unintentionally planted a tree that grew into a shade, giving new vitality to a house that feng‑shui masters had deemed unfavorable. After the renovation, the house exuded ancient charm and was full of a nostalgic, humanistic atmosphere. Mr. Hong decided to run an art‑tea house. It opened in 1991 (Minguo 80) and became the first tea house to revive prosperity in Jiufen. The rustic “Tea‑Pot‑Painting” curtain at the entrance embodies the tea house’s business philosophy. From a wide view, the large partitions and neatly stacked goods are arranged either side by side or front to back, with orderly heights, creating an overall harmony. Below the courtyard, the fish pond and small garden, the antique master’s chair at the corner complement the distinctive tea set, while the dignified central hall and the inscribed plaques on either side still welcome important guests to this day.
