Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean The Eikan Ancient House Community is a place where you can see traditional houses built from stone bricks and red tiles everywhere. Underfoot, you will not find asphalt roads, but rather traditional stone bricks. In 1989, Eikan Village was listed as a Traditional Settlement Protection Area, making it Taiwan's first such protected zone. The Eikan Settlement Conservation Area was established during the Xianfeng and Tongzhi periods of the Qing dynasty. The most famous site in Eikan Village is the Chen Family Grand House, a third-class heritage site. It not only boasts the largest scale in the entire county, but its stone carvings, wood carvings, and paintings are also outstanding among private residences. Today, it is the only fee-based house that can be visited in Eikan. Eikan is one of the few traditional settlements preserved in the country. It currently houses a children's playground, a traditional museum, and an intertidal zone museum. Visitors can once again taste the sweetness of snacks bought from the local citrus shop during childhood, or purchase local "mosquito coils" made from Dayu chrysanthemum, mugwort, and mountain lotus. Besides being a historical building in Penghu, Eikan is also one of Taiwan's Hundred Scenic Historical Buildings. Walking through the Eikan Settlement, you will see pastoral scenery and rural scenes everywhere. Being in Eikan feels like traveling back in time, returning to your hometown in childhood. Free from the disturbances of urbanization and technology, it maintains its original character and holds significant historical and cultural value. It is also a must-visit destination in Penghu. In 2001, the Ministry of the Interior designated Eikan Village as the country's first traditional settlement conservation area. In recent years, the restoration of the ancient houses has been completed by the "Eikan Village Settlement Advancement Association," which has fully utilized the space and developed it into various small exhibition halls with local cultural characteristics, including a community life hall, intertidal zone museum, community museum, Han medicine hall, children's playground, and the Baoge Hall.
