Wenshi Academy was once the sole academy in Penghu and also the oldest school there. It was established in the 31st year of the Qianlong reign (1766), and was later destroyed during the Sino-French War. During the early Japanese occupation, the academy was converted into a field hospital. After the hospital was removed, the academy was extensively renovated into Penghu Confucius Temple. It is located next to the Penghu Life Museum on Xingsheng Road in Ma'ao City and is the birthplace of education in Penghu. Because Penghu was renowned for producing Wenshi stones, the academy was named after them. When it was first built, it housed the deity of the Imperial Examination Star, which is why it was also called “Kui Xing Lou.” It underwent several major reconstructions over the years; in 1895, local residents converted Wenshi Academy into a Confucius Temple in order to preserve Chinese national culture. In 1999, the Penghu County Government allocated a budget to rebuild it, giving it its current form, and it is now also referred to as “Penghu Confucius Temple.” As you enter the gate of Wenshi Academy, you can immediately see the tall stone tablets along the walls; the inscription of the Shilang Jing Tai Tablet has already worn smooth. The architecture of Wenshi Academy follows the traditional Qing dynasty style, featuring a standard Chinese double‑storey pavilion. It includes the Grand Hall, East Courtyard, West Courtyard, Da Cheng Gate, Lingxing Gate, and Chongsheng Shrine, among others, preserving the traditional architectural style. 【Recommended length of stay】 1 hour
