Copper Monkey Store Xin Yi District

2025-08-30
During a Saturday night on a trip to Bali, two members of the Taipei Monkey Kings rugby team sat at the Sari Club discussing the possibility of opening a sports bar in Taiwan. These two friends—Peter Chworowsky, an American entrepreneur who had long lived in Taiwan, and Max Murphy, an Australian who had recently moved from Shanghai to Taiwan—continued chatting late into the night over Bintang, the local beer of Bali. (At the time, the other teammates were nearby drinking and dancing.)

That day happened to be October 12, 2002. In no way could they have imagined that shortly afterward, two extremist terrorists would plant bombs at Paddy’s Bar and the Sari Club, a tragedy that killed 202 people and injured hundreds. Unfortunately, five members of the Taipei Monkey Kings team also perished in this incident.

About two months later, Max asked, “Peter, do you remember what we were talking about that night?”

Peter replied, “Yes.”

Max suggested, “Let’s do it!”

Thus, six friends from Australia, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and the United States joined Max and Peter to complete this project. Coming from diverse professional backgrounds, they contributed their respective expertise to the planning efforts, and thus Copper Monkey was born on February 28, 2003!

We regard Copper Monkey as a tribute to the friends we lost, and we hope this place will offer residents of Taipei and visitors alike the best venue to enjoy their favorite sports programs or gather with friends.
