Cheng Feng-Hsi Memorial Library

2021-12-28
The Cheng Feng-chi Memorial Library was inspired by Mr. Cheng Feng-chi’s lifelong concern over the scarcity of library facilities in rural areas; he resolved to establish a library himself, but unfortunately passed away from liver cancer before his dream could be realized. His widow, Ms. Wu Chi-chao, undertook the arduous task of fulfilling his wish, founding the “Cheng Feng-chi Cultural and Educational Foundation” and raising the funds needed for the building. With assistance from many quarters, the library was completed in 1989, covering 1,716 m². Designed by the renowned architect Li Tsu-yuan, its ship-shaped structure is its hallmark, and in 1992 it was honored as an outstanding township library. Situated along County Road 164 in Yunlin, the library-cum-museum features a distinctive slanted, ship-like roof. Its striking form rises beside emerald rice paddies, and from afar it resembles a sailboat catching the wind, forging ahead across the open sea—just as his books inspire readers to persevere. Standing on the side of Route 164 in Kouhu Township, the building’s most notable feature is its sloping, boat-shaped roof. This library was Mr. Cheng Feng-chi’s greatest wish: to give local children a comfortable place to study and a rich collection of books. Inside, visitors can view books he used and the prosthetic limbs he wore, offering all who are interested a closer look at his life story.
