If you love ecological expeditions, you're certainly familiar with Headliao Big Pool! Located on the Zhugao-Cuo Industrial Road, the new Fu Fushan is commonly referred to by the public as Headliao Big Pool, an artificial reservoir. The combined area of its two pools covers 19 hectares. In addition to irrigation needs, local farmers use it to raise fish. The well-maintained environment of Headliao Big Pool has attracted many bird species to gather, especially during winter when migratory birds pass through, creating a kind of bird festival. Farmers drain the large pool once every three years and the small one every two years, making it an ideal time to witness the spectacular osprey fishing display. With their long, narrow wings, ospreys soar high in the sky, spot their prey, accelerate for a sharp dive, and swiftly extend their claws to strike with precision. Watching this scene live is more thrilling than a National Geographic documentary; catching this live show is truly unforgettable! In addition to ospreys, the show includes hawks, including black kites, peregrine falcons, kestrels, gray-faced buzzards, and greater coucals, all of which are must-see performances.
The island at the center of the large pool, named "Chi Zhong Dao," is known for its famous "Land God Temple in the Water." After the land god was moved to Fuchang Temple, this small artificial island surrounded by green trees has become a nesting ground for large herons, great egrets, snowy egrets, and night herons. Occasionally, one can also spot mallards peacefully floating on the calm water. Taking a quiet moment to observe this serene scenery and feel the gentle flow of time is also a delightful experience. Another winter specialty of Headliao Big Pool is the resident raven, known for its fierce temperament. Ravens often engage in fierce aerial battles with raptors for food, yet they surprisingly surrender to smaller birds like the black-capped kingfisher, making its behavior both amusing and fascinating. Other species worth watching include red-collared doves, kingfishers, zebra finches, Taiwan blue magpies, and dozens of other bird species. Bring binoculars and a camera and immerse yourself in the joy of birdwatching—it promises to be a rewarding experience you won't regret.
