Street temple fairs, Mazu pilgrimages—wherever a religious event is taking place, the clang of gongs and the roll of drums can be heard. In Siansi Township, Changhua County, Yong’an Drum Craft Workshop preserves the traditional art of hand-made drums, now in the hands of third-generation owner Huang Cheng-feng. As technology advances, many traditional crafts are gradually being replaced by machines, and the “master craftsmen” we speak of are becoming ever fewer. In the days before machinery, artisans relied on repeated learning and trial-and-error to create the value of handwork, infusing every finished piece with the warmth of their hands. This long-established drum workshop still keeps the most traditional techniques alive; from sun-drying the cowhide, soaking it, shaving it, shaping it—every step is intricate and indispensable to this time-honored craft.
