Master craftsman Huang Wen-bin’s marquetry is rooted in traditional wooden-pattern joinery, yet he never hesitates to challenge conventions and innovate. Where others see discarded scraps, Huang sees treasure. Guided by the principles of recycling and reverence for wood, he glues and presses tiny off-cuts, then turns them on a lathe using bearing mechanics. By orchestrating the natural hues of timber, he produces breathtaking “treasure-box” marquetry pieces. Shifting from the precision and standardization demanded of wooden patterns to the artistic freedom of functional craft, he couples meticulous color design with years of research, forging a singular mastery that has garnered numerous awards: the 5th Top Ten Craftsmen (Golden Skill Award), 4th Hsi-hsi Fine Arts Exhibition Honorable Mention, 12th Taiwan Craft Design Competition finalist, 2008 Taiwan Craft Competition finalist, and 2015 Taiwan International Woodcarving Competition finalist. In 2020 Huang was named a “Taiwan Craft Master.” At “Jing-Pin Mei Creative Workshop,” every angle is calculated with mathematical rigor; every design is planned to perfection, yielding exquisite marquetry works that elevate woodworking beyond mere carpentry into refined craftsmanship.
