Tamsui’s “Xin Sheng Fa Bakery” is the first branch in fifty years of the original Pucheng shop in Banqiao. A four-storey storefront was purchased for forty million NT dollars and completely renovated to present a purely hand-made “Taiwanese heritage bakery,” giving every Tamsui visitor a chance to taste the traditional flavors of memory. First-generation founder Du Fa entered the pastry trade at thirteen as an apprentice, initially selling ceremonial turtle-shaped buns and classic Chinese pastries. Honest ingredients and excellent taste soon earned the shop a local reputation. While preserving tradition, the family keeps experimenting; “Mashed-Bean & Pork Crisps” were Du Fa’s own idea sixteen years ago and remain Xin Sheng Fa’s signature exclusive. Du Su-zhi and her youngest daughter both studied in Japan, bringing back Japanese baking techniques that balance the sweet-savory filling and allow the preservative-free pastries to stay fresh for six days—an innovation that proved wildly popular and cemented the shop’s fame.
