Old House Turned Salon: A New Cultural Hub in Huwei
Former legislator Wang Li-ping spent two years restoring a 70-year-old “Greater East Asia”–style house tucked away in downtown Huwei, transforming it into a base for ecology, gender issues, and alternative globalization. Not only has she preserved a historic Yunlin landmark, she has also added a salon for promoting art, culture, ecology, and gender awareness.
Huwei Salon hides in a downtown alley, a building blending Japanese and Western styles erected around the 1940s. Swallowed by later urban sprawl, it was little known even to locals. Two years ago Wang chanced upon the property, bought it, and began its revival as a space for serious artistic and cultural development.
Huwei Salon is Yunlin’s first venue to combine art, culture, ecology, environmentalism, and literature. Wang says the project conserves the building’s original beauty while incorporating contemporary artworks, fostering reflection and dialogue, and leaving Yunlin a public space worth savoring.
