The Xiahai Chenghuang Temple located at No. 1 Section of Dihua Street was built in 1856 (the sixth year of Xianfeng). It covers about 46 ping. Although it does not have a grand temple appearance, its belief circle is extensive, and the incense is always thick. Every time there is a temple fair, it is always lively and becomes a major local event, closely related to the development of Dadaocheng. The main deity enshrined in the Chenghuang Temple is the Old Lord of Xiahai Chenghuang. The secondary deities include the two judges (the civil and military judges), the two generals Xie and Fan (the seventh and eighth elders), and the thirty-eight loyal and brave men. The accompanying deities include the Chenghuang's wife, the eight officials, the eight generals, the Ma Shi Elder, and the Moonlight Elder. This famous ancient temple currently has about 200 deities, making it the temple with the highest density of deities in Taiwan.
In the Xiahai Chenghuang Temple, besides the Chenghuang, the most attractive to tourists is the worship of the Moonlight Elder. Every year, over 6,000 couples come to offer gifts to express their gratitude. Among them, the most popular is the "Yufu Shoes" (also called "Happiness Shoes"), which is a well-known "love talisman" in Taipei. On average, over 200 families come to the Xiahai Chenghuang Temple every year to "seek shoes." According to legend, the Chenghuang and his wife are about 70 years apart in age. Under the situation of "an old husband loving a young wife," the people believe that this "divine couple" can bring happiness to the family, which gives rise to the origin of the "Yufu Shoes."
In folk tales, the Chenghuang Temple also has a miraculous story. In 1884, during the Sino-French War, the French army attacked Taiwan. At that time, the people of Taipei came here to pray sincerely for the protection of the Xiahai Chenghuang. The Chenghuang indeed showed great power, and in the end, the French army was defeated at Wudu and could not capture Taipei. Therefore, the people call the Xiahai Chenghuang "the Honorable Lord of Might."
