Wunshui is located at the upstream of the Shuangshui Stream and its tributary, Dahu Stream. The strata that Wunshui Stream flows through are partly composed of loose shale. After every flood, the water becomes murky and unclear. The residents thus call it Wunshui. (In Hakka, "汶" means浑浊, or murky.)
In the early days, the mountain products from the southern area of Shitan, the northern five villages of Tai'an, and the Dahu area were transported to Wunshui Old Street and then to Miaoli City by rail. This area was a major goods hub and a primary distribution center.
During the 50s and 60s, when materials were scarce, locals made tea cozies out of straw, which had good insulation properties. These tea cozies, known as "tea shous," became a distinctive feature of this place.
After the current township head vigorously petitioned for funds to rebuild Wunshui Old Street, it has taken on a new look. It fully reflects the simple and practical style of the Hakka people and is sure to boost the cultural and industrial development of Shitan.
In recent years, Wunshui has become a gateway for tourists entering the "Sheba National Park" and "Tai'an Hot Spring Scenic Area." The old and dilapidated settlements have taken on a new appearance. The old, traditional wooden buildings have been renovated, and new signs have been put up. The rebuilt brick pathways have been restored to their former glory, exuding a sense of nostalgia.
Although it is no longer as prosperous as it once was, the serene scenery has a unique charm. Besides the "tea shous," the proximity to Dahu has made strawberries a ubiquitous feature of this place. Strawberry wine, strawberry sausages, and strawberry ice cream have become local specialties.
In addition to the existing shops, on every second weekend, local residents set up stalls in front of their homes, selling Hakka noodles, vegetable dumplings, and preserved vegetable soup. They invite passing tourists to stop and enjoy a snack.
Come visit Wunshui Old Street on a weekend and experience its unique charm firsthand!
