Mt. Erjian is located in Longyan Village, Meishan Township, Chiayi County. It is a subsidiary peak of Mt. Dajian, with an elevation of 1274 meters. Starting from Zhuzaiqin, follow the ridge line of Mt. Dajian. Pass the No. 1 triangulation point of Mt. Dajian, which is 1304 meters high. Then, slowly descend to a good rest spot for hikers.
Another trailhead is located behind the Longxing Temple. Follow the sleeper railway tracks and ascend. The trail is lined with bamboo forests and cypress trees. Occasionally, pass through tea plantations for a different scenery.
Every year, from late autumn to early winter, when cold air masses come, one can see the magnificent sea of clouds. Walking on the trails, it feels like being in a place away from the world.
The elevation of Mt. Dajian is 1299 meters. There is a No. 1 triangulation point on the summit. The two peaks are located on the ridge and are about 15 minutes apart.
From the top, looking towards Gugou, one can see the Yun-Chia Plain and areca nut trees.
Looking towards Meishan, one can see the valley, tea plantations, and in the distance, Caoling. The view is great.
There are three main trails to Mt. Dajian.
1. Entry point of trail No. 10-5:
Located in Huashan Village, Gukou Township, Yunlin County. Start at the Huashan Educational Farm on County Road 149 at 29K. Take trail No. 10-5. The early part has stone steps. The latter part is a rocky path where one needs to hold on to ropes to ascend. The trail is mostly shaded by bamboo groves. However, the slope is steep and challenging.
2. Entry point of trail No. 4-1:
Located in Huashan Village, Gukou Township, Yunlin County. Start at Guaitou, along County Road 208. Take trail No. 4-1 and 4-2. Pass through Mt. Erjian. Follow the ridge to Mt. Dajian. This trail is the longest and has the best road conditions.
3. Zhuzai Ridge:
Located in Longyan Village, Meishan Township, Chiayi County. This trail is the shortest.
