Hongya Bookshop is located near the North Gate Station of the Alishan Forest Railway. The books in the store are categorized into sections such as indigenous people, environmental ecology, Pingpu tribe, Taiwanese literature, cultural reflection, Japanese colonial period history, and even cats and bookstores. Every Wednesday, Hongya Bookshop hosts lectures, which have been held continuously to date. The owner uses the bookstore as a base to carry out various cultural asset preservation works in the Chiayi area, such as the Taiwanese Library and Yushan Traveler's Lodge. The bookstore also mobilizes citizens to participate in environmental or cultural issue parades. Hongya describes itself as the most active social movement bookstore south of the Zhuo Water River, but in reality, it is the independent bookstore most closely linked to social movements across Taiwan.
