Inspired by Hsieh Wei-shui, Hong Ya Bookstore, self-proclaimed as the "most active independent bookstore to the south of浊Water Creek (Tuosen溪)," has hosted over a thousand lectures in more than two decades of operation. In its 10-tsubo (approximately 33 square meter) storefront, owner Yu Kuo-hsin has filled every inch with his ideals and indomitable spirit. Shelf selections remain entirely unswayed by commercial interests, offering a comprehensive collection of historical and cultural publications on Chiayi and Taiwan, alongside literary, historical, and philosophical works. Yu firmly believes that operating a bookstore can transform a city's cultural landscape, connect and drive cultural activities, and showcase meaningful local scenery. As the digital age progresses, the print market faces major challenges, leaving precarious prospects for physical bookstores. Many endure by supplementing their income with dining or curated retail options. Hong Ya Bookstore remains steadfast: by continuing to sell books solely, they demonstrate the true function of a bookstore. Inspired by Hsieh Wei-shui, a pioneer of Taiwan's democratic movement, Yu has hosted a cultural lecture every Wednesday since opening the store over two decades ago—more than 1,200 sessions to date. Who was their most renowned lecturer? The answer: Wu Nien-chin. Legend has it the line for his talk extended out onto the street.
