台中市西區精明一街
"Jingming 1st Street" lies between Dadun 19th Street and Dalong Road. The entire street stretches about a hundred meters, featuring beautiful walkways, elegant storefront signs, and bright display windows. Along the pedestrian zone you’ll find boutique fashion, tea and coffee houses, exotic restaurants, and art galleries. Sidewalks are dotted with open-air seating; on weekends and holidays the street hosts alfresco concerts and art exhibitions—an echo of Paris’s Champs-Élysées—making it a destination for shopping, leisure, and art. When the first dozen shops moved in, their owners, impressed by the street’s visual potential, dreamed of turning it into a European-style cultural promenade for pedestrians only. After negotiations—and unanimous consent—they adopted a residents’ covenant banning motorcycles, while cafés set out terrace tables and benches for strollers. Dedicated staff kept itinerant vendors in check and curated events and landscaping. Thanks to the collective effort of all property owners, the strip was named Taiwan’s Model Shopping Street in 1995, propelling it to fame as one of Taichung’s signature sights. In 2023 the Taiwanese action film "The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon," winner of the 60th Golden Horse Award for Best Action Choreography, filmed scenes here, turning the street into a pilgrimage site for movie fans. Sit at an outdoor table, sip a fragrant coffee, watch the flow of passers-by, and savor a different rhythm of life. Rows of colorful parasols and varied tabletops conjure the feeling of being on Paris’s Champs-Élysées. Cultural events here are vibrant—poetry shows, installation-art exhibitions, concerts, costume parades, plus surprise performances by buskers—all of which lend the street extra vitality, offering visitors a space of sensibility beyond consumer culture.
