The Diaoshan Historic Trail, also known as the “Tomb-of-the-Unmarried Hiking Trail,” stretches about 2,700 meters. A leisurely walk with a few friends not only exercises the body but also lets you savor the beauty of wooded valleys and undulating green ridges, evoking reflections on the past. When spring arrives, blossoms burst across the cliffs in breathtaking profusion, once inspiring scholars of old to coin the name “Diaoshan Spring Scenery.” The trail’s origins date to 1898, the 31st year of Meiji, when placer gold was discovered in a stream. Prospectors traced it upstream from Shuimeiping Mountain in Ruifang to Mudankeng Mountain in Shuangxi, uncovering a gold vein. Miners flocked in, and a light railway was built to haul ore, along with mine offices, medical stations, and other facilities. The route became the vital link for locals traveling between Ruifang-Jiufen and Shuangxi-Mudan for trade and work. In those days the path bustled with travelers, and it gave rise to romantic, bittersweet mountain legends—among them the tale of the Tomb of the Unmarried, which exists in several versions. Unlike the Jinzibei Historic Trail, the Diaoshan path offers little shade; visitors should remember to bring sun protection.
