Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean are present in Erkan; each house is a Chen family ancient house. In this place, Erkan Village is a single-surname village in Penghu, so everyone there has the surname Chen, making it a rare single-surname village in Penghu. In the Erkan Settlement Preservation Area, there are many traditional buildings, and every corner features stone bricks and red tiles. The ground is not asphalt but traditional stone bricks. The highlight is the Chen family ancient house, No. 6 Erkan Village, Xiyu Township. Because the owner of this house was Yuan Yi Pharmacy owner Chen Ling and his brother Chen Bang, it is called the Chen Ling Bang Memorial Hall. It dates back to the Qing Dynasty Shunzhi period when Jinmen resident Chen Yan Yi settled here. From the founding ancestor Chen Ting Yi to the present, there have been nine generations over three hundred years. Because Chen Ting Yi rarely contacted the outside world, Erkan Village eventually became a closed settlement, developing into a single-surname community. Due to the strong northeast monsoon in Penghu during winter, the houses were built on low ground as Minnan five-level ancient houses. The main hall, living room, and rear hall are all connected by courtyards, forming a “K” shaped traditional compound layout that creates intersecting indoor‑outdoor circulation. The corridor in front of the hall uses small arches to connect with neighbors and serves as a defensive escape system. The Chen Ling Bang Memorial Hall is made of local Penghu “laogu” stone and basalt for the walls and supports the roof structure, with traditional architectural decorations such as painted calligraphy, pottery, painted tiles, and clay sculptures, beautifully reflecting Penghu’s traditional craftsmanship. It was designated as a Grade III historic monument on April 25, 1988. The entire ancient house, aside from the Minnan residential structure, also incorporates many Southern Ocean Western elements. Currently, the whole house is a national Grade III historic monument, and descendants still live there. Visitors can purchase tickets to enter and appreciate the complete architectural style and artifacts, while imagining the living conditions of that time. 【Suggested stay time】 1 hour
