Mazu New Village was constructed in 1957 and was initially planned as a residential area for the families of the 84th Army Division stationed in the Matsu Islands. It was once a home to numerous high-ranking military officer households, earning the nickname “a constellation of stars.” Today, after enduring the tests of time, Mazu New Village has become a crucial site for preserving the heritage of military dependents’ villages, a place where travelers are encouraged to slow their pace and savor its charm. The unique appeal of Mazu New Village lies in its well-preserved military dependents’ village landscape. Through the design of the housing units, one can clearly see reflections of life organized by rank and authority, authentically recreating the social context of that era. In 2004, the Taoyuan City Government designated Mazu New Village as a heritage building and followed the concept of “restoration combined with revitalization,” successfully transforming it into a model integrating military village heritage and creative cultural industries. This has allowed the former prosperity of the village to flourish anew. The Heart of Film Culture in Mazu New Village Step into the Chungli Film Archive and experience the unique cultural rhythm of Mazu New Village. This art-filled cinema with 75 seats is an important center for local film and television education. Its monthly themed film festivals and handpicked film screenings not only offer a free visual feast for residents but also attract numerous film enthusiasts to gather here for appreciation and exchange. Art Regeneration in Historical Spaces Housing units No. 1 to No. 3 of Mazu New Village have been transformed into the “Mazu Village Art Gallery,” a dynamic arena that draws the attention of many young artists and cultural creative practitioners. By opening annual exhibitions and inviting artworks, the space—originally bearing histories and memories of military dependents—has been reborn as an exhibition venue full of creativity and culture, becoming a great platform for artistic and creative exchange. A Cultural Garden for Family Enjoyment Amidst the beauty of the military village, you can also experience the endless charm of art together with your children. The “Mazu Kindergarten Art Center,” restored from the original Matsu Kindergarten, is newly designed as a base for children’s art education. Combined with a parent-child interactive space and exhibition activities that promote art education, it helps connect art to life and lays a foundation for early artistic and cultural awareness. Exploring the Unique Artisans and Shops of Mazu New Village Mazu New Village provides a stage for artisans to showcase their talents and creativity. Many distinctive shops have moved into the area, offering not just perfect spots for photos but also delicious food and homemade ice cream shops where visitors can taste the village’s signature flavors while experiencing its unique charm. Additionally, the site offers diverse hands-on activities—including artisanal perfumes, pottery, leather craftsmanship, tailored cheongsam experiences, and more—making it an ideal choice for a relaxing weekend outing.
