The name "Bu Lao" comes from the hot springs. The area got its name because the water in the nearby stream remains warm throughout the year. Early settlers in the area used the hot spring water for washing purposes and called the stream "Hot Water Stream". Later, villagers discovered that bathing in the stream made their skin smooth and tender, as if they had returned to their youth. Hence, the stream was renamed "Bu Lao Stream".
The hot spring business initially started with simple wooden structures and the hot spring water was channeled to provide bathing facilities for tourists. It was named "Bu Lao Hot Spring", which became famous and is one of the longest and most renowned tourist attractions in Liuqiu District.
The Bu Lao Hot Spring is located in the valley of Bu Lao Stream, a tributary of the Laonong Stream. It is a weakly alkaline sodium bicarbonate spring with a temperature of around 44-45 degrees Celsius and a pH value of around 7.7. It contains 1460 ppm of bicarbonate ions and 593 ppm of sodium ions. The water is clear, colorless, and odorless, with a rich mineral content.
Soaking in the hot spring can relax the body and mind. The warm water stimulates the sensory nerves, accelerates metabolism, and alleviates muscle pain, improving physical mobility. Visitors can also hike around the Bu Lao and Mei Lun Shan trails to exercise.
