The National Museum of Natural Science houses several plant-related exhibition and research areas, including the Herb Garden, eight outdoor display zones of the Botanical Garden, and the Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse. Located in the outdoor Chinese Medicine exhibition area of the Hall of Human Cultures (formerly the Hall of Chinese Science), more than a hundred species of living medicinal plants are on display. Every herb in the garden is accompanied by an interpretive label providing the correct scientific name and therapeutic uses.
Occupying roughly 4.9 hectares, the Botanical Garden focuses on Taiwan’s low-altitude ecosystems and tropical rainforests. Carefully selected and arranged, it showcases representative native habitats in eight landscaped zones: Raised Coral Reef, Lanyu, Coastal Forest, Taitung Cycad, Northern Low-Altitude, Central Low-Altitude, Southern Low-Altitude, and Monsoon Rainforest. Native trees, shrubs, herbs, and ferns are cultivated throughout, bringing the total number of plant species (including the greenhouse) to more than 800.
The Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse is a distinctive, pagoda-style Chinese glasshouse rising about 40 m. Inside, utility and ornamental plants are displayed in settings that simulate rainforest environments—emergent trees, riparian rainforest, forest floor, and lowland rainforest—comprising roughly 400 species.
