Taiwan’s Western Trunk Line has a long history; planning began in the Qing dynasty, took shape under Japanese rule, and was further developed after World War II, greatly increasing transport capacity. By the end of the twentieth century, double-tracking, electrification, and undergrounding projects had created a continuous rail corridor from Keelung to Kaohsiung. Today it integrates with the MRT and high-speed rail, letting passengers travel easily between north and south Taiwan. Heading south from the bustling Taipei metropolis, the landscape shifts to the unpretentious small-town scenery of Yingge Station in New Taipei City. Once a key coal-transfer hub, the station loaded coal from the Sanxia district onto trains bound for other regions. As a ceramics center, Yingge has since reinvented itself as a tourist destination, cultivating a rich artistic and cultural atmosphere. Inside the station, the preserved coal-loading platform remains a precious relic of the past.
