桃園市大溪區普濟路52號
The "Artisan Hall," originally constructed as the police officers' residence for the Takao District office during the Japanese colonial period in Showa 16 (1941), served as a police dormitory. After the Nationalist government's relocation to Taiwan, President Chiang Kai-shek converted it into a residence, later occupied by the Yu Jichang family, who vacated and allowed it to remain unused for years. Given Taliao’s historical prominence as a hub for woodcraft industry and its high-quality wooden goods characterized by sophisticated mortise-and-tenon joints, inlaying, carving, brush painting, and lacquering techniques, its refined craftsmanship stems from dedicated artisans and the ethical principles established through the master-apprentice system—embodied in Taliao’s woodcraft philosophy of "craftsmanship and personal cultivation." To revive the artisans' glory, the Woodcraft Museum designated the former residence as the "Artisan Hall," not only showcasing traditional Taliao wooden crafts and artifacts but also emphasizing the profound principles and ethics embedded within, connecting people, materials, and tools while linking the artisan's "craft" with the user's "usage," evoking the emotional resonance of "functionality and beauty." Aspiring for the Artisan Hall to serve as a vital base for inheriting artisanal spirit, it aims to enable the public not only to appreciate the beauty of woodcraft but also to grasp the lineage of artisanship and to deeply experience the craftsman’s spirit behind these wooden creations.
