The Shifen Waterfall Park, located near the old street, is situated on the main stream of the Keelung River. Due to the river's erosion, it has formed a unique landscape of fault terrain and peculiar rocks, creating numerous waterfalls and geological wonders. The most famous one is the magnificent Shifen Waterfall.
If you start from the Shifen Visitor Center and walk along the Siguangtan Bridge, you can enjoy the geological landscape of Siguangtan's pot holes and the beautiful scenery of the Eyeglasses Cave Waterfall.
Shifen Waterfall and Caihongyuan Waterfall are both curtain-type waterfalls. The rock layers on both sides of the waterfall have a direction opposite to the water flow, which is a characteristic of a reverse slope layer in geography.
Due to its resemblance to the Niagara Falls in North America, Shifen Waterfall is also known as the "Taiwanese Niagara Falls."
The deep pool below the waterfall creates a misty veil when the water crashes down, and a rainbow often appears suspended over the waterfall or pool when sunlight shines through the mist, hence the name "Caihongyuan."
There are multiple viewing platforms near Shifen Waterfall, allowing visitors to observe the waterfall from various angles. As you walk along the trail, you can see the emerald green pool at the top of the waterfall, feel the momentum of the river pouring down up close, and absorb plenty of negative ions.
When you walk down to the lower platform, you can have a panoramic view of the waterfall, making it an ideal spot for observation and a popular spot for travelers to take commemorative photos.
