In the narrow alley of Taiyuan Road, No. 97, in the Datong District, lies the only remaining typesetting workshop in Taiwan—Ri Xing Typesetting Workshop. The name "Ri Xing" was founded by Mr. Zhang Xi-Ling, and is now managed by Mr. Zhang Jie-Guan. Mr. Zhang Jie-Guan upholds the belief that "as long as there are printing factories in Taiwan that need lead type, Ri Xing will accompany them until the end." When the largest typesetting workshop in Taipei closed down, the casting machines at Ri Xing never stopped, and it has continued to persist till today.
In the early days, the typesetting workshop was an essential part of the movable type printing industry. The three commonly used fonts—KaiTi, SongTi, and HeiTi—and seven different sizes can still be seen at Ri Xing, all preserved and cast intact. In recent years, through the support and assistance of various professionals and enthusiastic volunteers, Ri Xing has gradually transformed, continuing to produce lead type, and striving to create a perfect set of casting molds. It also hopes to build a movable type printing craft museum. It aims to preserve the culture of the typesetting industry and movable type printing, and to give this ancient craft new cultural significance.
At Ri Xing, you can book group tours, and through detailed explanations, you can deeply experience Ri Xing. You can also go with a few friends, follow the on-site instructions, and become a typesetter, accompanied by the sound of the casting machine, as if returning to the bustling scenes of the past. Recently, Ri Xing has held photo and text contests, tour guide training activities, and launched cultural and creative products such as lead type stamps and movable type printing experience sets. You can choose your favorite lead type, use your creativity to create your own lead type stamp, and even print unique business cards. We welcome everyone to come and explore!
