1895 Guardians of Taiwan Peace Commemoration Park

2025-10-22
The Wuwei Baotai Peace Commemorative Park is established to commemorate the anti-Japanese volunteer army in the Guangxu years of the Qing Dynasty. In addition to a sacrificial hall for people to honor the martyrs, there are also two antique cannons, pavilions, and flower stands in the park. The ancient cannons were originally built in 1884 (the tenth year of Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty). During the tenures of Governor Liu Mingchuan and the Japanese occupation, they were tools used by volunteer forces against the enemy. Originally placed before Guasha Hall (currently the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall), they were moved to before the Guasha Garden Restaurant in 1972 (year 61 of the Republic of China), and then relocated once again to the current site in 1983 (year 72 of the Republic of China). The original official name of the park was "Guasha Mountain Anti-Japanese Martyrs Memorial Park". After renovation and redesignation, the park was officially renamed "Wuwei Baotai Peace Commemorative Park" in February 2008 (year 97 of the Republic of China). The renovated park features a fresh and attractive environment with modernized curved ramps and a spacious wooden platform. Visitors can enjoy a view of Dadu Creek, reflecting on the indomitable and heroic spirit of the volunteer forces during the anti-Japanese battles. Now peace has replaced the wartime atmosphere, and the shady trees as well as bird chirps and insect songs have made the park a beloved recreational spot for many local residents.
