The Ciyun Temple in Houlong, which has been around for over 220 years, is the only Taoist temple in Miaoli County that has the most complete historical documentation. If we consider all the Mazu temples in Taiwan that are registered with the government, it is one of the oldest and most complete Taoist temples. The Ciyun Temple, which has been around for over 200 years, is the oldest temple in Houlong. The temple has many ancient artifacts, which is unmatched in the numerous temples in the Houlong area. These include an ancient table from the Qianlong period and a plaque with the seal of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing dynasty, which reads "Yu Tian Tong Gong". The temple faces south and is divided into a main hall and two side rooms. The main hall enshrines the goddess Mazu, and the side rooms enshrine the Land God and the Goddess of Childbirth. The temple is very popular and has a lot of incense.
Every year on the Lantern Festival, the Ciyun Temple hosts a very interesting folk activity called "shooting the fortress". The activity involves the temple suspending a miniature castle on a 10-meter long bamboo pole. The participating archers will light their own firecrackers and throw them into the front and back gates of the castle to trigger the explosives inside and win the prize.
