The Li Family House of Zhongzhuang in Huatan is a traditional three-sided courtyard building constructed by Li Shangbo, the patriarch of the third generation. The wooden framework and painted decorations of the main structure largely retain their original appearance, offering significant artistic value. The main hall houses deities and ancestral tablets, serving as the family's ancestral worship site. The main hall is composed of three bays, with a six-panel door that can be fully opened during ancestral ceremonies for convenient access. The main hall uses a through-purlin structural system, while the wing rooms have hexagonal windows arranged in an Eight Trigrams (bagua) pattern, symbolizing the warding off of evil and invoking auspiciousness. Colorful paintings on the eaves and lintels above the main hall's door and bagua windows depict themes such as "Eight Immortals," "Master Yi Inviting Virtuous Scholars at Weishui," and "Master Shun Cultivating Lishi Mountain." Due to the age of these artworks, they have suffered severe deterioration. In 1999 (88th year of the Republic of China), damage from the 921 Earthquake caused the collapse of the gate tower and walls, and dislodged or shattered roof tiles. Further damage was inflicted in 2001 (90th year of the R.O.C.) when a typhoon struck. Currently, only the main hall remains relatively intact. The main hall was officially registered as a historic building on April 10, 2002 (91st year of the R.O.C.). The adjacent wing structures were reconstructed using reinforced concrete to mirror the original design. Source: Changhua County Cultural Affairs Bureau.
