Peitou Daan Temple is regarded among the three major Matsu temples in Zhanghua County, along with Zhanghua Nanyao Temple and Lugang Tianhou Temple. Originally, the Temple was known as Tonglu Street's Tianhou Temple (original site located in Xizhou Village, Jiumei Village, present-day Xizhou Township), established during the Kangxi era and known as the oldest Matsu temple in southern Changhua. However, in the 11th year of Emperor Jiaqing's reign (1806), due to floods and war devastation, Tonglu Street was destroyed, and its inhabitants migrated en masse to "Peitou" and rebuilt the Tianhou Temple. This was symbolically meant to signify "found a foundation for settlement, gather peaceful people," and the "Tianhou Temple" was hence renamed "Daan Temple." During the Qing Dynasty, Peitou was the most prosperous street in the southern Zhanghua region. Consequently, Daan Temple developed a large Liangzhuang faith circle covering the current Peitou Town, as well as parts of Xizhou, Tianwei, Pitu, extending its influence to Tianzhong Town and Ershui Township. The old Peitou Daan Temple was officially classified as a National Grade 3 Heritage Site in the 72nd year of the Republic era; however, due to aged deterioration and expansion of the front hall, it was relocated to the Taiwan Folklore Village in the following year. The front hall expansion was undertaken and officially completed with the return of fire and enshrinement in the 92nd year of the Republic era. Within the temple, five Qing Dynasty soft-bodied Matsu statues and a millennium-old red cedar Guanyin Bodhisattva statue are significant historical artifacts.
