Located by the riverside of Gongguan, the "Baozangyan International Art Village" boasts a historical axis that not only encompasses the temple of Baozangyan, a municipally designated ancient relic, but also extends to the surrounding historical settlement. This settlement primarily consists of unauthorized buildings constructed during the 1960s and 1970s. These structures, built along the mountain and by the river, twist and turn in a complex manner, showcasing a unique Taiwanese settlement landscape.
In 2004, Baozangyan was officially registered as a historical building, preserved in its original form as a living settlement. In 2010, the "Baozangyan International Art Village" commenced operations, adopting the concept of "symbiotic settlements" and introducing initiatives such as "Baozang Home," "Artist-in-Residence Program," and "Youth Hostel." These efforts aimed to revitalize and preserve Baozangyan through a combination of art and residence, creating a diverse and rich settlement landscape.
The "Baozangyan International Art Village" serves as a platform for connecting residents and resident artists, injecting new vitality into the area. Currently, it features 14 artist studios, providing working and living spaces for domestic and international artists. Additionally, it includes a rehearsal room, exhibition room, and outdoor performance space.
From the riverside green space below the settlement, the sprawling ruins appear as a historical cross-section, forming a clue to reading the rich historical texture and diverse spatial structure of Baozangyan.
The "Youth Hostel," comprising seven rooms, officially commenced operations in April 2014. The Youth Hostel aims to become a pathway through the settlement, seeking to reveal the marks of time and embody a "living" space for human settlements. By opening up the experience of "residence" to the world, it combines the spiritual essence of natural and human settlements, engaging in dialogue with the world.
Baozangyan, located near the Fuhua Bridge and the old waterworks, is a historically formed settlement with unique landscape characteristics. Its winding alleys and staircases following gentle slopes create a distinctive appearance, with structures built along the surrounding hills, blending natural and man-made features.
In recent years, through policies aimed at revitalization and preservation, the introduction of artists and creative studios has made it possible for the public to experience this unique cultural symbiosis. Additionally, Baozangyan features an ancient temple dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, which has stood for two to three centuries. The temple provides a space for worship and prayer, while the riverside and bike path offer opportunities to enjoy the scenery and ride along the Danwu River.
