Guoxing Township is an agricultural area and the Hakka heartland of Nantou; most residents are of Hakka descent and make their living primarily from farming, followed by animal husbandry. Nangang Village is especially renowned for its sambar deer farms and is considered the “hometown of Taiwan sambar deer.” More than 100 households in the village raise deer as their main occupation, and the practice has a very long history. During the peak velvet-antler harvesting season, the sight of farmers collecting and preserving the antlers draws crowds of onlookers.
