The New Village located in Kunjiang, Beimen District, is the site of the former residence of Hong Tong, a self-taught painter known as the "Eastern Picasso." Despite being illiterate and having no formal training, Hong Tong began painting intensely at the age of 50. His unique style, characterized by mysterious text and rich colors with a hint of spirituality, gained him recognition. His early experiences as a child spirit medium, folk beliefs, and life experiences profoundly influenced his artistic style, which often features a kind of religious hypnosis. His paintings are filled with vibrant, mystical, and religious imagery. As a result, his works not only feature hieroglyphic-like images but also a sense of familiarity with folk talismans. His abstract and childlike style, combined with bold and vibrant colors, drew domestic and international attention, including a visit from President Chiang Ching-kuo at the time. After gaining fame, Hong Tong refused to sell his paintings, even when struggling financially. He was known for his stubbornness and had three "nots": firstly, "not selling paintings," as he believed selling them would mean losing their essence, and he could never recreate the same work; secondly, "not drawing ears," as he believed ears would allow him to hear the world's criticism and complaints, so he omitted them, unless they were adorned with beautiful earrings, which is why many of his characters appear earless; and thirdly, "not living in someone else's designed house," as he refused to live in government-provided housing. Instead, he self-painted a "Golden Pavilion," hoping to build his own studio. Due to his unique personality and reluctance to engage with the outside world, Hong Tong passed away in 1978, leaving behind astonishing works and a mysterious life. The Yun-Jia-Nan Management Office combined local characteristics and community imagery to paint Hong Tong's artworks on community walls, allowing visitors to understand his life and experience his fantastical world. Upon entering the village, visitors can see remnants of daily life in Hong Tong's studio and admire his paintings on the walls of many homes. Furthermore, the Xin'an Temple in Kunjiang's New Village features a permanent exhibition of Hong Tong's works, and interested individuals are welcome to visit and appreciate them. The Yun-Jia-Nan Management Office stated that Hong Tong's story has gradually been forgotten, yet he remains an indelible legend in Beimen and one of the representative figures of the artistic literature in the saltwater region. It would be a pity if he were to be completely forgotten. By developing the cultural and artistic spots around Hong Tong's former residence, the office hopes to lead visitors to explore every corner of Beimen. Beimen is not only a beautiful wedding photography location but also a place filled with artistic atmosphere unique to the saltwater region. They sincerely invite everyone to come and explore Hong Tong's spiritual and imaginative world together.
