Traditional ChineseJapaneseEnglishKoreanOn Chungzheng Bridge leading to Huxi Township, in the eastern sea of Chungzheng Bridge lies a small island quietly standing in the ocean. In contrast to the busy traffic on the bridge, the isolated islet appears mysterious and tranquil—this is Yaqing Yuz. Yaqing Yuz, anciently known as Guilong Yuz, has a narrow and elongated rock formation resembling a dorsal ridge exposed on its western side during low tide, called "Longwei" (Dragon Tail). The eastern part of the island resembles Guiyu (Aogur), hence the name Guilong Yuz. Additionally, it has alternative names including Yujing Yuz, Yenze Yuz, Guilong Yuz, Yenjinh Yuz, and Mijing Yuz. There are several legends regarding the name Yaqing Yuz nowadays. It is said that there was a couple of geese on the island. The male goose went out to forage for food, but the female goose was taken away by humans. To find the female goose, the male goose remained on this island permanently until death. Locals named it this based on the legend; it was initially called Yanqing Yuz and later changed to Yaqing Yuz. Another explanation is that before the establishment of Yong'an and Chungzheng Bridge, villagers from Dashan and Chungtun often crossed by wading through this route to transport agricultural and fishery products to Magong. As the island was right next to this path and visible clearly, it was called "Yian Yuz" ("Island before eyes"). Eventually, this was corrupted into Yaqing Yuz due to phonetic similarity. Yaqing Yuz spans 0.0069 square kilometers, with 0.331 kilometers of coastline and a maximum elevation of 14 meters. Its geology is primarily basaltic terrain. The northern and southern sides reveal red volcanic breccia and red soil layers. These red rock strata mainly form from the rocks being weathered by seawater over a long time. Proximity to Huxi Township’s Zhongxi Village made it convenient for the local residents to herd cattle and grow sweet potatoes there in early times. The island also includes ruins of bunkers and deep caves, allegedly dug by Japanese soldiers during the Japanese colonial era to prevent the US military from landing. Additionally, the ROC army was stationed on this island approximately thirty to forty years ago. During low tide, Yaqing Yuz becomes a tidal-connected island. Visitors can cross from below Chungzheng Bridge through the large exposed intertidal zone surrounding the island to reach this uninhabited island. Nevertheless, one must be cautious of the tidal schedule—when high tide returns, the intertidal zone is submerged by seawater, leaving only the basaltic rock formation of Yaqing Yuz emerging from the sea, appearing uniquely beautiful, secluded, and mysterious. 【Recommended visiting time】 1 hour
