The historical origin of Lecheng Temple, a Mazu Temple in Hanchi Village, Taichung City, dates back to the early Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. The ancestors of the Lin family immigrated to Taiwan for pioneering and development. To pray for smooth sailing and successful reclamation, they reverently welcomed the "Erlangma" golden statue from the Mazu Temple in Meizhou, Anhai Town, to Taiwan. When the Lin family and others passed by the current site of the temple, they encountered a divine manifestation and chose this sacred site to temporarily enshrine the deity. Over time, the settlers achieved success in their reclamation efforts. In the 18th year of the Qianlong era (1753 AD), a group of determined individuals founded "Lecheng Temple" at its current location, where believers could pay their respects morning and night. By the 10th year of the Taisho era (1921 AD), due to the increasing population and the formation of settlements, the number of worshippers also grew. To accommodate the growing number of believers, the Village Headman of Hanchi Village, Lin Yuanquan, along with Zhang Mei and Lai Weiyao, proposed a plan to rebuild the temple on a larger scale. They collaborated with local enthusiasts, including Lin Dafa, Gong Xianchai, Lai Weiyao, Lin Atang, Lin Tong, and Lin Jun, to promote the reconstruction project. The construction process was arduous and lasted for many years. The main hall of the temple was completed in the 13th year of the Taisho era (1924 AD), while the Sanchuan Hall was completed in the 4th year of the Showa era (1929 AD). Finally, with the expansion of the rear hall in the 80th year of the Republic of China (1991 AD), the grand and solemn temple architecture of "Lecheng Temple" was fully realized. A comprehensive overview of the establishment, renovation, and expansion of "Lecheng Temple" is akin to a chronicle of local pioneering history. According to the "Annals of Sacrificial Rites of Zhanghua County" from the 12th year of the Daoguang era (1832 AD), there were 21 Mazu temples in the county, including one in Hanchi Village. This serves as evidence that "Lecheng Temple" was already a well-known Mazu temple in the county during the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty.
