In this tranquil little village lies a history that is a source of pride. In 1968, the young Bunun tribe children from the Red Leaf Community formed the Red Leaf Junior Baseball Team, which defeated the reigning Japanese world champion team, sparking a baseball craze across Taiwan and earning the Red Leaf Team a lasting place in history. Beyond baseball, Red Leaf Village has another remarkable feature: it was designated as the "Taitung Red Leaf Village Taitung Cycad Nature Reserve" by the Council of Agriculture. Originally, the Taitung Cycads endemic to this region were mistaken for the commonly known Taiwan Cycad, but after verification by experts, they were identified as a 140-million-year-old living fossil, hence named the Taitung Cycad. The annual April "Ear Shooting Festival" is the most significant and grand celebration for the Bunun tribe, showcasing a full range of ceremonial processes including prayers for blessings, ear-shooting rituals, pork distribution, spear-shooting rituals, and declarations of hunting achievements. Most importantly, the world-renowned Bunun "Eight-Harmony Polyphonic Singing" performs here in its most authentic form. [Source: Tribal Backpacker – Taitung's Aboriginal Tourism Guidebook]
