The old-style mountain artillery could not withstand the overwhelming enemy forces at Bagua Mountain, formerly named Dingjun Mountain. When Changhua City was completed in the 20th year of Jiaqing (1815), a brick fortress named Dingjun Mountain Fortress was built on the mountain, housing four artillery platforms and one city pavilion. In the first year of Tongzhi (1862), Dai Chaochun allied with the Bagua Society to launch an uprising. A few days later, Bagua Mountain was occupied, and the Dingjun Mountain Fortress artillery was seized and used to bombard Changhua City. Changhua City was then captured two days later.
