The "Shengping Theater" originated in 1916 as a wooden theater stage next to the old market, which mainly performed Taiwanese opera and could hold about three to four hundred people. In 1927, the theater collapsed due to age, and the operator rebuilt the theater on the same site in 1934, occupying about 200 ping of land, making it the largest theater in Taiwan during the Japanese rule. However, due to the severe outflow of population in Jiufen, it closed down in 1986. The unique architecture made it a popular filming location for many movies, including "A City of Sadness", "Dust of Angels", and "Cafe. Waiting. Love", which captured classic scenes. Not only is it the oldest theater in northern Taiwan, but it is also a must-visit tourist attraction in Jiufen. When Shengping Theater was first built, it was a wooden structure, which was rebuilt with hollow walls in the 1960s, and the surrounding houses were built during the Japanese rule. As a popular location for art workers, the New Taipei City Government's Bureau of Cultural Affairs and Tourism Bureau later renovated this historical building, restored its function as a movie theater, and currently, the interior exhibits an old projector donated by the Wu Cangfu family, and commissioned Mr. Lai from the Jiufen Folk Museum to set up a scene from the 1950s and 1960s, giving people a sense of being in an old theater. The operational part of Shengping Theater is currently managed by the New Taipei City Gold Museum.
