The coastal mountain valley reservoir near the garrison can be fully viewed from a high vantage point on the Northern Ring Island Road. Letaoao Reservoir is located in the northern part of Xijiu Island, roughly one-third along the top left edge of an inverted triangle. Initially oriented northeast and later turning northward, it is an open-valley area where sediment deposits formed a bay known as Loutao Ao — its name was changed to the more elegant-sounding Letaoao. To address long-standing drought conditions and shortages of freshwater resources on Xijiu, where water drawn from resident-drilled wells was insufficient for daily needs, the military selected this valley to construct a dam. Building was assisted by soldiers and garrison troops. The reservoir serves civilian, defense, and irrigation functions across a catchment area of approximately 12 hectares. Today, Letaoao offers residents beautiful views of the bay and surrounding mountain scenery. On clear days, the interpretive signs along the Northern Ring Island Road provide an excellent spot to enjoy the mainland landscapes and the sunset. Alongside the Ring Island Road, various abandoned military sites remain — some guard posts feature staircases leading down to the shoreline. These sites are ideal for adventurous exploration and discovery.
