Hehuo Canteen was founded by a group of Lukang natives and partners from the “Preserve Lukang” movement. The name plays on the homophone of “partnership” and conjures the image of “lighting a fire to cook (he) rice.” When the characters for “grain” and “fire” are combined, they form the word “autumn,” echoing the energy that the annual Autumn Art Festival brings to the town. Beyond the yearly celebration, the goal is to weave the curatorial spirit of “a community of shared life” into everyday local living. In Lukang we “live together”; in the canteen we “eat at Hehuo.” Through the simple act of sharing a meal, we savor the human warmth and local affection that the Autumn team has cultivated in Lukang over the years.
