Qinglian Temple is the center of faith in Ruisui. Considering the needs of local believers, besides the main deity, Buddha Shakyamuni, today Qinglian Temple also venerates Taoist deities, such as Guan Di Sheng Jun, Mazu, the Earth God, and Zhusheng Nai Nai. Local believers can worship at this temple for blessings, combining both Buddhist and Taoist faith practices. Therefore, Qinglian Temple has developed a unique religious structure rarely found among temple complexes in Taiwan, integrating both Buddhism and Taoism into one. The Qinglian Temple, established as a century-old landmark, carries its unique mythological tale. A pair of bamboo cages placed in the temple appear ordinary yet have a history spanning over a hundred years. According to legend, during the Qing Dynasty's Guangxu era, an elderly man brought a pair of bamboo cages to Datamayan (now in Ruisui's Rubei area) and left them there, but never returned to collect them. When locals finally opened these cages, they unexpectedly found two Buddhist statues inside. Within each cage was an instruction slip stating that one statue should guard the water source end (Ruisui), while the other should be safeguarded in Mata'an Village (Guangfu). Thus, this became the historical origin of the two sister temples in both places today. In 1972, Hualien experienced a major earthquake, which damaged Qinglian Temple. However, the shrine statues and bamboo cages miraculously remained unharmed. The locals consequently regarded them as spiritually protected, manifesting divine power. To this day, these bamboo cages remain the sacred treasure of Qinglian Temple. The temple's exterior walls and interior flooring all employ locally sourced serpent stone, a product of Ruisui, creating an architectural atmosphere reflecting the region's cultural characteristics. With its well-established management system, the temple is well-lit, solemn yet warm. Many local and visiting worshippers come to Qinglian Temple, making it the spiritual and faith hub for the people of Ruisui township.
