When the Alishan Sacred Tree ended its legendary life in a natural falling manner in June 1998, it was replaced by the Alishan Xianglin Sacred Tree and the Giant Tree Trail. Currently, there are two phases of the Giant Tree Trail within the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, divided by the Shenyi Bridge. The first phase of the trail starts at the Ciansui Cedar and adopts an elevated wooden boardwalk and point-like cement base grounding design, an ecological engineering approach. It ends at the Sacred Tree ruins. The trail is 600 meters long, with 3 elevated wooden bridges along the way, offering a view of 20 giant trees, including Chinese Red Cypress, with a chest diameter of 5 to 12.1 meters and a tree height of 25 to 42 meters. After its completion in November 1998, visitors strolling on the trail couldn't help but marvel at the majestic landscape, "big trees are beautiful." In August 1998, to connect the Red Cypress giant trees around the Tree Ling Pagoda, the Forestry Bureau set up wooden fences around the Alishan Xianglin Sacred Tree and the Ciansui Cedar and built an observation deck. Along with the first phase of the Giant Tree Trail, it formed a sizable giant tree system within the recreation area. Starting from 2001, the Forestry Bureau began to develop the second phase of the Giant Tree Trail, starting from the Shenyi Bridge near the Alishan Sacred Tree ruins. The trail is 418 meters long, with 16 Chinese Red Cypress giant trees scattered along the way. The 28th giant tree has a diameter of 4 meters at breast height, the tallest on the trail, while the 2nd giant tree is the oldest. From mid-March every year, the Giant Tree Trail is lined with blooming Rhododendron morii, with clusters of flowers decorating the towering Chinese Red Cypress forest. The misty fog adds to the unique landscape of the Alishan flower season.
