The overflow pipe is used to discharge excess water from Sun Moon Lake into the Shui Li Stream. It is called a "tianjing" by the residents near Sun Moon Lake. The overflow pipe is shaped like a round tower. The circular shape allows water to flow out quickly. The circular tower-shaped overflow pipe has a fixed water level. When the water level is normal, the lake water will not flow into the tower. Once the water level exceeds the full water level, it will automatically flow into the overflow pipe for discharge. The overflow pipe is a 24.39-meter-diameter funnel shape, with the diameter gradually decreasing from top to bottom, connecting to a tunnel with an inner diameter of 3.48 meters and a total length of 219.93 meters. To adapt to the complex terrain and landforms, the tunnels and channels change many shapes, which is also one of the reasons why the Sun Moon Lake Hydropower Project was considered the "largest hydropower project in the East" at the time.
