Yannan Academy is the site where Zhu Xi, a scholar from the Song Dynasty, delivered lectures in Jinmen. As the earliest cultural and educational sanctuary in Jinmen, it helped foster a literary atmosphere, which led to the emergence of many scholars during the Ming and Qing dynasties. During the late Ming period, Yannan Academy was converted to Taiwenyan Temple, primarily venerating the Black-Faced Master of Qing Shui. It is also grouped among the five major temples in Jinmen, alongside Taivu Mountain Haiying Temple, Tianpu City God Temple, Jincheng Nanshui Fragrant Lotus Temple, and Anqian Lord En Temple. The interior design of Yannan Academy forms a "return" ("回") character plan. The main hall enshrines the Black-Faced Master of Qing Shui, while the rear hall centrally venerates Wenchang Emperor, Zhu Xi, and God of the Bell Star—deities associated with examinations and scholarship. The side rooms are dedicated to art exhibitions and activity spaces, allowing visitors to view calligraphy and browse books. A colossal scroll-shaped installation art piece stands in the courtyard outside, featuring a unique style that also serves as an alternative check-in site for tourists. Moreover, Yannan Academy's elevated terrain offers an excellent vantage for panoramic views of both the Jinmen city area and Xiamen cityscape.
