Bo'ai Road, Hankou Street - Camera Street

2021-05-06
台北市中正區漢口街、博愛路、開封街
The camera street around Bo'ai Road and Hankou Street, commonly known as the "Bohan District," has the most concentrated photo equipment stores in all of Taiwan.

This camera street has witnessed the development of photographic equipment in Taiwan. Since the late Qing Dynasty and the early Japanese rule period, after photographic technology was introduced to Taiwan, cameras were always expensive items, and few people could afford them. A single camera could be exchanged for a house or over a thousand catties of white rice, making it a luxury item. At that time, there were many government offices and media publishing houses in "Taipei City," and it was also close to the convenient Taipei Railway Station. The photo equipment stores gradually became prosperous due to these customers.

After 1958, when the large film camera "Rollei" from Germany, known as "Luolai," opened a store across from the Taipei Post Office, stores like Xingfu and Universe on Hankou Street, and Rongmei and Yongsheng on Bo'ai Road also opened one after another. Each store had its own specialties and gradually gathered scale. Until recent years, nearly 50 camera stores have been established here, offering a full range of brands and various accessories. With the change of the times, cameras are no longer expensive, but rather every person has a digital camera. To find a good camera, one must come here. The old stores' insistence on professionalism naturally has customers who know how to value quality products.
