Nanbu Dai Bagou Wetland is located in the southern part of the city of Budai, Chiayi County, within the idle salt field of the old Budai Salt Field's No. 6 Salt Field. The total area (including the lagoon water area) is approximately 1,385 hectares. It is bordered by the West Coast Expressway and Zhanliao Gully to the north, Taiwan Provincial Highway 17 and Budai Junior High School to the east, Longgong Creek to the south (which flows into Taiwan Provincial Highway 17), and the lagoon water area to the west. In the past few hundred years, the area was originally a shallow lagoon of the Dàofēng Inner Sea (the existing Hǎoměi Lagoon). Later, it was reclaimed by early immigrants and became a fishpond. In the 1930s, the Japanese forced the reclamation of the land and established a salt field due to their southward expansion and urgent need for salt, known as the "mother of industry". After World War II, during the 1950s and 1960s, the salt production industry thrived and created a brilliant era for the southwestern coastal region of Taiwan, known as the "White Gold Age". However, with changes in Taiwan's social and economic structure, the Taiwanese salt industry could not compete with the globalization of salt imports. In 2002, the Taiwan Salt Company announced the cessation of salt production, marking the end of Taiwan's salt industry. Today, after years of abandonment, the salt fields have been transformed into a wetland paradise. The land has been eroded and leveled by rainwater, and the underground water level has dropped, causing land subsidence. Through natural succession, the area has become a popular habitat for migratory birds. From September to April of the following year, the area is one of the most important habitats for wild birds on the southwestern coast. In Nanbu Dai Bagou Wetland, various bird species can be observed, such as the black-faced spoonbill, white spoonbill, and red-billed gull. The rich species diversity is worth exploring.
