Simplified Chinese Japanese English Korean Xiaomeng Whale Cave is located in Xiaomeng Village, Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Originally, Whale Cave was a volcanic basalt headland, but over time it was eroded by the northeast monsoon and the continuous action of seawater. Eventually, erosion cut through the rock, forming a sea cliff-like sea erosion arch that resembles a whale stranded on a beach, which gave it the name “Whale Cave.” Because the area around Xiaomeng Whale Cave is composed of basalt geology, the terrain is relatively barren and plants struggle to grow here; only cacti have adapted to this harsh environment. Walking along the slope, you can see many cacti thriving despite the rugged terrain, some even blooming beautiful flowers that leave a deep impression. Near Whale Cave, you can see the nearby “Beehive Field.” This special scenery actually originated from local people developing beehive fields made of goulou stones to protect plants and crops from the harsh effects of the winter northeast monsoon. These structures help shield against the winter wind, enabling better growth of plants and crops—a very unique sight.
