The lighthouse in Dongji was built on the sharp reef to the north of Dongji Island, at a height of 47 meters. It is the highest point on the island and serves as a crucial navigational reference for ships passing through the Heishui (Black Water) Creek. During the late Ming and early Qing periods, Taiwan and Xiamen, Fujian had frequent maritime exchanges. Based on earlier nautical experience, ships sailing east from the mainland relied on visual sequential identification of the Hongshui (Red Water) Creek and the Heishui Creek, and only by passing through Xiyu and Huayu could they safely reach Dongji Island. In the early years, numerous shipwrecks occurred around the Wang'an sea area, with most incidents located around Dongji Island. Because maritime accidents were most frequent in this area, many sailors and fishermen were terrified upon hearing of them. Therefore, in Meiji 44 (1911), the Japanese built a lighthouse, hoping to improve maritime safety in the area. The original tower of the Dongji lighthouse was a cylindrical iron structure. However, even after the light was activated, the navigation safety in the Heishui Creek channel did not improve. To strengthen the lighthouse’s protective function, it has undergone several equipment upgrades and refurbishments, continuing to illuminate and guide vessels.
